After taking several years away from the game industry, in 2015 I had that itch to experiment with the (then) latest in commercial game engines. From that experimentation, and leveraging my contacts in the industry sprang Canuck Play Inc., incorporated in 2016 as a stereotypical ‘basement game studio’. The flagship product, launched for Steam and XBox One, was Canadian Football 2017. A simple football simulation title using all the correct rules of Canadian football. Although a simple in-feature set, it was an extremely complex game to design and code, and it provided a good stepping stone to get back into the swing of things.
From there, both the game and the company grew and evolved. In 2018, the title was rebranded as Maximum Football and uniquely allowed complete and total customization of your game experience. You set the rules; Canadian, US College, US Pro. Team and Uniform customization, as well as a complete play designer, were fixtures of the title.
In 2019, Doug Flutie, star of the CFL, NFL, and USFL joined the quickly growing team as brand ambassador and the studio moved into office space in the heart of downtown Peterborough, Ontario. Canuck Play had partnered with two of the largest gaming platforms in the world and was a development partner with Unity, the game engine used to bring over 50% of the world’s games to life.
By 2020, Canuck Play titles were available on XBox One, XBox One X, PS4, PS5 and Steam. Titles were available in both digital and physical releases.
In 2021, the IP rights to Maximum Football were sold to U.S. based Maximum Games.
